The popularity of the iPhone far exceeded everyone’s expectations, and continues to be the highest selling phone many years after its launch. One of the main reasons why the phone has succeeded so well is that it allows for almost unlimited uses and can be customised for individual needs. Budgeting is among the most useful features of the iPhone. On the market today there are no fewer than 400 apps available for keeping track of expenses, but these are best ones..

Ace Budget
One of the more intuitive apps to use, they frequently keep updating it and work hard to provide latest financial information. The interface is really enhanced by great colour coding that allows you to get a clear snap shot of various parts of your budget and its easy to use even on the move. You can break your finances into different areas such as ‘Transportation’ and ‘Clothing’. You can also pull off reports to give you better long-term insight into your spending. If one thing held this app back it would be a underdeveloped search feature.

Expense Tracker
This app does much the same job as Ace Budget and allows you to switch between currencies with ease. Whilst not as well colour coded as Ace Budget, the Expense Tracker app can still be used quickly and easily. You can even track requests you’ve made for money such as solicitar credito. More useful things this app can do include being able to interface with Google Docs, transferring profiles between phones, and managing multiple profiles on one phone.

iXpenselt
This app may be of interest to you if information security is a primary concern. Regular provision of security updates and new features means that your information goes no further than you want it to. Something I really love about this tool is the ability to store photo receipts with ease and assign them to any payment. Being able to make a quick back-up of all financial data is another usual function. For all those out there who like to monitor their money very closely and without any risk, this is app to choose, even if its not quite as pretty as the other options.

To get more money-management tips and information about prestamos en efectivo go to Provident.

With the iTunes App Store being a few months over a year old now, it’s nice to see apps marking their first year anniversary. One that is commemorating its 1-year with a sale is the list manager Foodle.

Created by Anything Honest, Foodle sets out to be the best iPhone list manager out there. While it focuses primarily on grocery items, Foodle works well with any kind of list keeping you’re interested in. Our AppSmile team was impressed with the quick load time and simple interface of the app, but we want to focus on four aspects that really make Foodle stand out above other list tracking apps.

First, Foodle sports a tremendous database of predefined items. That means that as you create your first list and begin to enter items, a supplemental listing of possible items appears below. So, if you begin to type in “Lemo”, Foodle will suggest “Granulated lemon peel”, “Juice, lemonade”, “Lemon extract”, etc. List creation is sped up rather significantly due to this great feature.

Second, location services are available within Foodle. When you are in a store and you launch the app it will ask to use your current location. As you browse and find products and check them off your list, they will be remembered in the database. That means the next time you add that particular selection to a list, it will locate where you found it last time (it does not remember store name, only location). We really think this aspect is handy if you have multiple stores around you but can’t remember which one carries tomatillo salsa. Plus you can see which mapped locations carry the majority of your list items.

The third noteworthy aspect of Foodle is the emailing capability. Say you and your wife or significant other both have lists of items you want to get on your way home from work. Yet the other person is closer to a store having your items. Just email the list to your friend or mate (any Foodle user actually), and it will send the list with a link to open it in Foodle. Upon activation of that link, Foodle will launch and import the list in question.

The last characteristic we wanted to mention about Foodle is the shake to sort ability. As you make your way down your list, checking off items, just give your device a shake to rearrange the list. This moves checked items to the bottom of the list while moving outstanding ones to the top.

Yes, Foodle has certainly made good use of its first year in the App Store. The $0.99 anniversary sale ends tomorrow, so make sure you quickly add this 5-Dimple star to your list today. Or if you just want to check it out before checking out, a free version is available HERE.

Last night Godzilab released their much anticipated iPhone physics title iBlast Moki. We previewed the title in early July and fell in love with the graphics and gameplay. Since then we have been eagerly awaiting the official release into the App Store. Not since the release of the original Rolando have we been this excited about an upcoming game. Now that iBlast Moki is available, we want to reintroduce you.

The goal in iBlast Moki is to detonate bombs that you’ve placed within the scene to force the Mokis into contact with a red swirly space. Your speed in accomplishing the task determines whether you receive a gold, silver, or bronze medal. There are five worlds with varying locations, each unlockable once the previous world has been conquered, as well as the final Mokitozer. As you progress through the game, the levels get increasingly more difficult, requiring more than just a bomb or two. In later stages, you must use items like rope and balloons to complete the levels. You will need to string together a series of events in order to safely move the Moki from its starting position to the red swirl. Bomb detonation can be, and in most cases must be, delayed until certain events transpire which move the Moki into a specific location. All bomb delays are set before beginning the level. Failure to transfer the Moki to the red swirl requires you to try again until you get it right, tweaking bomb delays and placement until you find a successful arrangement. You’ll go far with lots of strategy and a little bit of luck. The speed and the number of bonuses you collect will grant you a gold, silver, or bronze medal. For example, collect all the flowers in a level while on your way to the goal and get a silver or gold (if completed quickly enough).

Controls are totally iPhone-oriented. Drag your items from the sidebar and place them in the game screen. Drag to see other parts of the level, pinch to zoom. Draw circles around the bombs to increase/decrease the delay. When you are set, tap the bomb button and see if you were successful or not. Even on such a small screen, Godzilab has tweaked these controls perfectly for iBlast Moki. This is a wonderful example of a developer taking in all the limitations and possibilities of a platform and then delivering an intuitive control mechanism that’s integrated into the game itself.

iBlast Moki includes a level editor so you can make your own levels or download levels created by other players, which increases the replayability of the game. A level editor instruction menu is included to walk you through the ins and outs of Moki creation bliss.

One of the great features we were thrilled to see added along the development path is the famed Plus+ Network. Players can connect with friends while browsing the Global Leaderboards. This may be the feature that blasts the game into the iPhone all-star realm. Additionally, we were pleasantly surprised to see such an engaging musical score fused into the game. We didn’t have the chance to hear what iBlast Moki would sound like in our preview and now have another reason to love it.

Although other games such as Rolando have harvested this much anticipation in the past, the AppSmile team believes iBlast Moki lives up the hype. iBlast Moki is a well honed, gorgeous platformer that will keep you playing for days. At $1.99, you would be doing yourself an injustice not to pick it up.

Perhaps you’re familiar with the age-old dream of turning lead into gold or Alchemizing. Based on this premise, a mysterious new puzzle game has entered the App Store ranks. Alchemize by Schiau Studios aims to turn the Match-3 gaming experience into gold by way of impressive visuals, unique gameplay, musical depth, and an intriguing storyline. Let’s dig a little deeper into the game to see if it’s worth its weight in…well you know.

Although, the game is essentially a Match-3 puzzler (meaning you need to match at least three items in rows of columns to gain points), Schiau Studios has built in a few cool features to set it apart from the pack. The store takes you through the journey of man to make gold out of nothing. Your goal is to combine potions to create goal and other elements on your way to achieving immortality and wealth. Sounds mysterious doesn’t it? Regardless of the story line, the game is fun and absorbing as it takes you through different worlds to discover new elements.

Gameplay comes in the form of Classic, Action, and Avalanche. Classic presents a Match-3 board with a twist of Tetris. Elements appear at the top of the screen allowing you to rotate and reposition them before swiping them into place. Continue to match sets of three or more elements in order to eliminate them and keep your element-stacks away from the horizon line. Once a set of elements is matched and eliminated, they will leave behind an element of the next highest order. For example, eliminating a set of Red Tulip elements will unlock one Fallen Leaf element to replace the bottom left element of the previous combination. Next, constructing and eliminating a Fallen Leaf combination will unlock and leave a Snowflake element behind. This progression continues until you unlock the Gold element (25 elements up the chain). Reaching these successive power-ups can be quite a challenge and quite rewarding at the same time. Action game mode takes the Classic mode and adds to it a countdown timer — as if you don’t have enough stress trying to stay away from the horizon! Making matches keeps the timer at a safe level momentarily. If the timer reaches zero, the game ends. Avalanche mode is similar but when the timer reaches zero, an avalanche of elements are dropped onto the board.

Alchemize hosts a well honed user interface. The in-game audio accompaniment aligns well with the overall mystical feel of the game. High scores can be viewed and uploaded to the Alchemize leaderboards. And instructions can be referenced at any time by returning to the main menu.

After spending some time with Alchemize, we’re confident in saying that we’ve found puzzling “gold”. Taking the best qualities from titles like Bejeweled 2 and Tetris, Alchemize comes off as a unique un-matched (no pun intended) $0.99 puzzle game that we are happy to award with our 5-Dimple gold medal.

Today ustwo has released their latest iPhone title into the App Store. Following the same pattern of fashionable style seen with Steppin’ and MouthOff, .™ brings a whole level of simplistic curiosity to the table. What was the title you say? .™, yes, .™

The story behind .™ is perhaps as interesting as the app itself. The team set forth to conceptualize, design, develop, and submit the a unique game to Apple in 48 hours flat. Accomplishing this was no doubt a difficult challenge, but at the same time, it expresses how inviting a development platform the iPhone is. Within the allotted 48 hours .™ was born. After submitting the .™ to Apple for approval, the ustwo team went to work generating anticipation for its release. Like everything coming out of “the studio of dreams” this campaign proved to exude creativity. Its tag line “Have You Seen the .™?” was quickly plastered on Twitter and other blogs across the internet. The culmination emerged as a Flickr slideshow of .™ in the wild where anyone could contribute pictures of everyday objects resembling what would become the game’s main character .™ After the sluggish Apple approval process, .™ is finally in the App Store and ready for consumption.

Launching .™ for the first time, you might not know exactly how to proceed. All you are presented with is a white pulsating dot on a gray background with a black hole. Soon you’ll see that your accelerometer is activated and the white dot responds to your movement. Drop the white dot through the black hole and the game begins.

Simplicity is key to .™ However, simplicity actually compliments the experience instead of detracting from it. You are .™, a white dot struggling to survive in a dark world. Your goal is to eat all the blue dots possible — this prevents shrinking to nonexistence. You must also avoid the red triangles at all cost. These will promote massive shrinkage putting you on the teetering edge of certain doom. Last as long as you can in the free-for-all. Upon elimination your score will display momentarily. Your score is the number of seconds you remain alive.

We love to see this kind of ingenuity coming out of ustwo’s London headquarters and can’t wait to see what surprises are next. The team has eluded to a future release of five more designer apps along the lines of .™ On sale today for $0.99, .™ might be the quirkiest, simplest, AND most addictive game you’ve bought in a long time. Plus it’s kind of neat to own the “first” 48-hour app!

One of the most exciting titles we’ve had the chance to preview has finally found its way to the App Store.

iBlast Moki by Godzilab thrilled us with innovative control mechanics and inviting characters. Here is an excerpt from our earlier preview:

The goal in iBlast Moki is to detonate bombs that you’ve placed within the scene to force the Mokis into contact with a red swirly space. Your speed in accomplishing the task determines whether you receive a gold, silver, or bronze medal. There are 5 worlds with varying locations, each unlockable once the previous world has been conquered, as well as the final Mokitozer.

iBlast Moki includes a level editor so you can make your own levels or download levels created by other players, which increases the replayability of the game. It also utilizes Facebook Connect.

iBlast Moki hit the App Store today with Plus+ Network integration. At $1.99, this is one blaster you should absolutely pick up.

Owning an iPhone can bring a lot of joy to one’s life. But for some, it’s not all sunshine. We’ve heard complaints about battery life since the onset. But for Gmail users, another shortcoming seems to plague them – the lack of push support for Gmail. With GPush, Tiverias Apps plans to fix all of the above.

Push notification allows a message from an app to display onscreen even when that app isn’t launched. Since the release of iPhone OS 3.0 many developers have rushed to implement this feature in their software. Sadly, Google and Apple haven’t yet jived on providing push notifications for Gmail users.

So, why do you need push notifications of your Gmail messages? Two simple reasons: 1) You won’t need to open your iPhone mail client to check if you have new messages, and 2) you will save battery power since push notifications don’t require the device to search and pull messages from the server, but push it from the server instead.

GPush does an excellent job at both tasks. After initially setting up the app with your Gmail credentials, you never need to access the app again. Now you will receive pop-up messages every time an email is delivered to that account. This works whether the screen is locked or not, or if you’re in another application or not. All GPush requires is an internet connection. If you receive two emails before you check your device, GPush will display the latest pop-up (not both – although the first was displayed before the second email came through). In order to actually read the email, you will need to open your mail client manually. At that time, the iPhone will pull messaged from the server.

We do wish Tiverias Apps included the ability to open the mail client from the GPush pop-up message. We also wish GPush supported multiple Gmail accounts simultaneously. That withstanding, GPush is an excellent app that we recommend all Gmail users purchase. Not only will it enhance your iPhone battery life but it will keep you up-to-the-minute on your latest email happenings. GPush is currently $1.99 on the App Store.

Laser Puzzle Game, a new offering from Sven Schramm, is available in the app store. Despite its sometimes head-scratching puzzles, this game disappointingly offers little in the way of polish or quality.

Laser Puzzle Game cuts right to the point. There is no music. There are no instructions. There isn’t even a loading screen or main menu. Launching the game immediately brings up the All Puzzles screen, from which you select a puzzle. All puzzles beyond the first are locked until the previous puzzle has been solved. Launching a puzzle brings up the game screen with a laser shooter and any number of laser catching receptacles. There are objects in the gaming area that act as barriers or obstacles to getting the laser into the receptacle. You have at your disposal a set number of angled blocks and splitters that may be placed in the gaming area to redirect the laser beam into its receptacle(s). When you believe that you have a configuration that will work, hit the done button and hit Fire to check your work. A red laser line will slowly make its way around the screen. If you are successful, the receptacles will light up. If not, the board is wiped clean and you must try again. There are 32 puzzles in all and no difficulty levels from which to choose.

The graphics are very simplistic, as are the controls. You tap on a piece to select it and tap on the game board to place it. Tap it again to remove or drag it to move it to a different location. We encountered several issues with the game. First, placing pieces is difficult, as they often don’t end up where you expect, requiring you to drag or remove. A grid would have been helpful. Also, dragging the piece from the bottom row onto the game area would have been better than tapping and retapping. Second, you shouldn’t have to hit Done and then hit Fire. It’s redundant. The Done button should be the Fire button. Third, if you hit Done accidentally, there is no way to back up without firing except to hit All Puzzles and start from scratch. Either way, if you fail, the board is wiped and you cannot just readjust a few pieces. You must replace everything. Fourth, the splitters do not always work. Often, the laser will travel through one side, but not the other, resulting in a failure and a wiped board, despite the fact that all pieces were properly placed. Fifth, it took several attempts before we could figure out how to use the splitter. Some form of explanation would have been nice. Sixth, the laser itself is ridiculously slow. We’re not looking for light speed, but it was a drag waiting for it to get where it was going. We’ve played through one-third of the game and found 6 shortcomings already. It doesn’t bode well for the rest of the game.

There are several other games with similar style in the app store. We unfortunately must recommend investing in one of those if these issues are not fixed. The game just doesn’t come across as enjoyable. Replay value is very limited, as we cannot see ourselves picking this one up again. Priced at $0.99, it is on par with the rest of the app store offerings. Laser Puzzle Game invokes the mercy rule for a 3-Dimple score.

Fling!, a terrific new logic puzzle from CandyCane, is available now in the app store. Playing like a Royal Rumble-style, last-man-standing match with colorful furballs, this deceptively simple game is sure both to frustrate and delight.

The player is presented with a grid containing multi-colored furball characters in a small number of the squares. You eliminate one furball per move by flinging one furball into another along a horizontal or vertical plane. The eliminated furball is sent hurtling out of frame, never to be seen again. Illegal moves include any attempt to fling a furball off of the board without first striking another furball or any attempt to fling a furball into a furball occupying an adjacent square. Keep flinging until only one furball remains. As you progress, more furballs populate the grid and the difficulty ramps up pretty quickly.

There are three game modes to choose from: Arcade, Free Play, and Challenge Mode. Free Play offers untimed gameplay so that you can complete the puzzles without feeling rushed. You may also skip certain puzzles if you like or return to solve previously played puzzles. Arcade and Challenge both track the time it takes to complete the puzzles. In Arcade, you are tasked with completing as many puzzles as possible before the time fully runs out, while Challenge requires you to complete a pre-determined number of puzzles on a specific difficulty level before time runs out so that you can move on to the next difficulty level. Arcade will put time back on the clock for quickly completed puzzles, while the time you start with on Challenge is all you get. Every puzzle’s solution is unique, and puzzles are created on the fly so that no two puzzles are the same.

Graphically, Fling! has a very clean interface, with columns and rows wide enough that you won’t accidentally fling the wrong furball. The characters are whimsical, with blinking eyes but little else. The soundtrack is somewhat reminiscent of a Christmas comedy score, but in a good way. Sound effects are fun and appropriate. Controls are simple taps for menu options and swipes for gameplay. Both work very well. Fling! autosaves your progress so that exiting the game or receiving a phone call will not have an adverse effect on your game. A hands-on tutorial provides all of the info necessary to get you up and flinging, and an undo button and hint option are also available in the event that you get stuck. Local and global leaderboards track high scores for timed modes.

We found this game to be quite addictive and certainly enjoyable. Puzzles really do get much harder as you progress in the game. Gameplay is very smooth and Fling! oozes polish. The game is simple enough for a child to pick up and play, yet challenging enough to keep adults hitting the Undo button and trying again. While similar to Sphaira, Fling! appears to have equaled or bested it in all conceivable categories. Replay value is high, as puzzle generation creates thousands and thousands of possibilities, leaderboards provide motivation and goals, and the game is just generally fun and addictive. Fling! is currently on sale for $0.99 to celebrate being featured on iTunes, so pick this 5-Dimple beauty up now.

Guitar Rock Tour 2, Gameloft’s follow-up to the successful Guitar Rock Tour, as been released in the app store. Boasting more stages, characters, and songs, this “tap tap”-style title brings the rock and then some.

Do you just wanna rock? Well, if you just can’t wait, jump into Quick Play mode and you’ll be shredding in mere moments. If you wanna be a rock star, launch Career mode. Here you can choose a character and sign your megastar contract. Choose whether to hit up Easy, Medium, or Hard mode and you’ll hit your first stage in New York. Do well there and it’s off to Miami, Detroit, Tokyo, Egypt, and beyond. Choose from the unlocked songs and grab your guitar or drum kit and get to it. The game screen shows a stage and band rocking out to a crowd. Using the guitar, a guitar neck sticks out from the stage with 4 strings terminating in colored discs. Similarly colored discs will slide the length of the strings toward the screen bottom. When the discs line up, tap them to play the note. Discs with tails are notes that must be held until the tail runs out. Accuracy is key. If you miss, the guitar will sound out of tune as you drop the notes. Run a hot lick and you’ll increase your multiplier and fill your pyro gauge, which can then be activated by flipping the switch or shaking your iDevice. It’s pure musical nirvana.

When using the drums, you’ll tap on either of two drums or two symbols, based on the color and positioning of the discs streaming toward you. You’ll have to think fast and move quickly to keep up.

There are tons of awards to be earned, from point-based achievements to cryptically-titled ones, such as Hard As Ice. Gameloft has even equipped you with local wi-fi multiplayer functionality, so that you can go head-to-head against your friends for bragging rights. With its OS 3.0 compatibility, you are also able to download new songs right from your iDevice, though it does come equipped with 18 tracks, most of which are fairly popular rock songs (Sweet Home Alabama, anyone?). There is even a decent tutorial for your instruments and for multiplayer mode. Integrated Twitter connectivity is also included so that you can tweet your successes.

Graphically, the game looks great. Of course, you don’t get to see much of the stage action as you become very focused on the streaming notes and your timing. The characters display a lot of the stereotypical rock star antics. If you get the chance, it’s pretty fun to watch. Sounds are great. The audio quality of the tracks is fine, as long as you hit the right notes. Controls are mostly tap-based, though the pyro can be activated by shaking. In all, the game is a lot of fun. The drumming took us a bit of time to get used to, but the guitar was pretty easy to pick up and play. The selection of songs is good, too, though we were unfamiliar with a couple of the tracks.

Replay value is high, as many of these songs never get old and there are enough achievements to keep you coming back for more. Also, hitting 100% accuracy on the songs can be quite tricky, especially on the more difficult modes. Guitar Rock Tour 2 is a great follow-up to the original, and it’s certainly on par with, if not better than, any of the other Tap-to-the-Tune games available on the iDevice. Guitar Rock Tour 2 cranks it to 11 with a solid 4-Dimple medley of greatness.

Click-wheel iPods. Sure they’re not the latest and fashion statement. Nor do they hold the same “I’m Tech Savvy” clout as the iPhone or iPod touch. But for music-loving multitaskers they do have one strong advantage over their touch screen brethren: the ability to change songs effortlessly without looking at the screen. You might not see the need for this until you’re navigating the expressway while trying to unlock your iPhone and then find the tiny next arrow. Or how about when you’re exercising with the iPhone strapped to your arm? It’s very easy to lose your tempo while trying to change tracks looking at the upside down screen (and I’m not even going to bring up involuntary switching to landscape mode).

Enter FluxTunes. Developed by Quokka Studios and available in the iTunes App Store, FluxTunes is a smart alternative to your built-in iPod music player. Its beauty resides in its ability to effortlessly peruse and play your music library while generously accepting sloppy screen taps and swipes. Granted, there is a learning curve to the gestures. To acquaint yourself with the FluxTunes commands, just tap and hold anywhere on screen. A menu with appear showing the various commands.

So let’s take it for a spin. To begin, you can launch FluxTunes while a song is already playing from your built in iPod player. FluxTunes will pick up the current song and continue with the active playlist (we were extremely happy about that). Alternatively, you can start FluxTunes, slide two fingers down, and select any song, artist, album, or playlist you want. To pause/play, simply tap anywhere on the screen. Advance a song by sliding left to right (this seems backwards to us since the next album art enters from right to left). Sliding right to left switches to the previous song or the beginning of the current one (if 10 seconds has passed). Volume can be adjusted by sliding one finger up or down. And the list goes on (see our menu screenshot). One great feature is that FluxTunes won’t lock your screen without you giving it the go ahead (four finger tap). Instead, it dims the screen after a user-defined time period. We understand this will have a drain on your battery, but it might be worth it for not having to slide to unlock every time you want change tracks.

Quokka has designed the UI to not only work great but look great too. Album art is displayed with the song info cleanly above it. With all these great features, FluxTunes nails the “control your iPhone while multitasking” issue dead center. We give it our coveted 5-Dimple rating.

Ever since we turned in (actually eBay’ed) our iPod Classic, we’ve been yearning for a little trivia time ala the iQuiz game available on our old click-wheeled friend. If you’re not familiar with the iQuiz title, it’s a game that scours your iPod music library and presents a wonderful trivia experience based on your music collection. That’s what we’ve wanted for the iPhone and iPod touch for some time now.

IMG_0433

Unfortunately, Apple never released an iQuiz app on the App Store. But with the release of iPhone OS 3.0, developers have had the chance to access the iPod library and create one of their own. A quick search for “music quiz” in the App Store, and you’ll see a variety of apps fighting to be the next iQuiz. Do any of them seriously contend with the original? Today we’ll look at Music Quiz Frenzy from the developers at Josss.

Upon first launch of Music Quiz Frenzy, you’ll notice that the visuals are somewhat flat yet modern. Much like a flash developed game using the provided button graphics. The visuals are funky, although a bit 1-dimensional. Choose to play Solo or Battle with a friend. Once a game mode is chosen, Music Quiz Frenzy takes a bit of time to load your library. This isn’t a huge time span but we suggest Josss gives a loading status bar so players don’t quit the app out of impatience. Better yet, speed up the load.

IMG_0431

Once the library loads, a playlist or the entire library can be selected. You can also decide if the game will be based on Artists, Titles, Cover Art, or Random. Normal game type takes you through a user-determined-number of questions while listening to snippets of a songs. Scoring is based on speed with the quicker answer receiving more points. A time meter is counting down at the top of the screen so be quick about it! Kamikaze game type adds a little more excitement to the mix by threat of elimination with the first mistake.

IMG_0438

One aspect that Music Quiz Frenzy does bring to the table, which iQuiz never had, is split-screen dual-player battles. Set the round options as before and duke it out. One downside to this approach is that the owner of the iPhone will most likely be more familiar than the opponent with his/her library.

Overall Music Quiz Frenzy provides a neat personalized music trivia challenge for your iPhone. Does it match the prowess of iQuiz? No. We have yet to find a music trivia app that shines with comparable visuals, sound effects, and bonus challenges of iQuiz. But Music Quiz Frenzy is a fun time-waster. Is it worth the $1.99 price tag? Considering it relies heavily on your own library and cover art without too many other frills, we say a $0.99 price tag is more suitable.

10 Pin Shuffle, a highly addictive sports-based iPhone app featuring both shuffleboard and bowling, has been released by Digital Smoke and was recently updated with wi-fi multiplayer support. With its beautiful 3D environments, highly accurate physics engine, and addictive gameplay, 10 Pin Shuffle is one of the best deals available in the app store.

037

10 Pin Shuffle offers you the opportunity to play either shuffleboard or bowling on a bar-style shuffleboard table with weights/pucks. In Shuffleboard, the end of the board is broken into scoring areas: 3 points is about a puck’s width and at the edge of the board, 2 points is also about a puck’s width and adjacent to the 3 point area, and 1 point is a much lengthier area adjacent to the 2 point area. Each player has 4 pucks and you alternate turns sliding pucks down the length of the table. Each throw is meant to outdistance any other pucks, knock your opponent’s pucks off of the table, or set your puck in a blocking position to protect another puck from being knocked off of the table. The puck farthest down the table scores points for that player, as well as any others that are farther down the table than his opponent’s farthest puck. Play continues until one player reaches the pre-set score of 7, 11, 15, or 21 points. If you choose to play against the iDevice, you start against Rookie Ricky, with the chance to unlock 3 other players of increasingly better skill by beating each player. You also have the option to play against another player or host a peer-to-peer game over wi-fi. A helpful tutorial is available to explain all of the rules.

039

The bowling game uses the same table with 10 bowling pins arranged at the end. You use your puck as you would a bowling ball, sliding it down the table in an attempt to knock over all of the pins. All of the typical bowling rules apply. The physics engine for the pin action is outstanding, possibly the best we’ve ever seen. As with Shuffleboard, you can play the iDevice, host a peer-to-peer wi-fi game, or play a 1 or 2 player game. Statistics are maintained so that you can evaluate your overall skill, and a tutorial is available for bowling, too. Great shots in either game trigger auto-replays for your enjoyment. The game also auto-saves if you accidentally exit or need to take a call.

042

Graphically, the game looks great, with very smooth animation and realistic effects. Simple things like shading and lighting effects give the game nice atmosphere and enhance the overall experience. There is no background music, but there are cool sound effects, from puck-bumping sounds to scoring effects to crowd applause and reactions. You can play music from your library if you really need to hear something in the background. Controls are outstanding and silky smooth. Simply touch-drag the puck into position and then swipe your finger toward the goal to send the puck sliding on its way. The direction and speed with which you swipe will determine where and how far it travels. It’s extremely easy to get the hang of, but it will take some time to really fling the pucks like a pro.

Though there are other bowling games and even a shuffleboard game or two available in the app store, nothing combines them with the polish and creativity of 10 Pin Shuffle. Replay value is extremely high, as no two games are the same, the controls take time to master, and it is just so darn addictive. This game has a permanent place on our iPhone already. Normally priced at $3.99, Digital Smoke is currently running a 50% off sale until August 31. Now is your chance to pick up this 5-Dimple stunner for a mere $1.99.

Lifeboat, a new action game from Fuel Games, has been released into the app store.

Captain Rickety’s boat, the S.S. Anchor, isn’t quite up to code when it comes to battling the elements. Eventually, his ship’s going down and we need to get as many people off of the boat as possible before that very last glub glub glub. Lifeboats will randomly appear on either side of the boat, equipped with timers that indicate how quickly they’ll shove off, with or without passengers. Tilt your iDevice left, right, forward, or backward in order to influence the direction that the passengers will tumble from the boat. Tumble five passengers into a lifeboat and receive a “full boat” time bonus, adding time on to the overall timer. There are green and gold lifeboats that offer greater bonuses if you manage to fill them to capacity. Many of your passengers will end up in the water. Tap them to toss out life preservers, yanking them back onboard. Better do so quickly, as a hungry shark has been seen circling this site… and it’s lunchtime. The more people you save, the better your score. When your timer runs out, the boat will slip into the depths of the ocean.

Lifeboat offers a helpful tutorial to get you acclimated to the controls. The game auto-calibrates to your current position when you start, so you can play in any orientation. Lifeboat offers both Quick Play and Campaign options. Quick Play is just straight up, save as many as possible for a high score. Campaign requires you to save a certain number of people in order to move on to the next location. You can earn coins to purchase upgrades, such as dynamic ballasts, swimming lessons, and more. Current and lifetime statistics are maintained, so you can check out your stats if you so desire.

Graphically, the game looks nice. There is nothing groundbreaking or Earth shattering here, but the game is pleasant enough to look at. Sounds are decent, with funny little comments by the passengers heard over an upbeat soundtrack. Controls, however, feel a little clunky. The boat seems slow to roll from side to side and passenger physics sometimes seem a bit off, like they tumble in place for a period before moving in any direction. Most of the passengers simply tumble off of the boat, which is slightly annoying. It would be nice if there was a mechanism to corral them somehow. Overall, gameplay if all right, but it gets repetitive really quickly.

Replay value is there, but it’s not as high as one might have hoped. In essence, Fuel Games has created a time management game, but not one to really threaten stealing the thunder from the other games in this ever-expanding genre. It is priced appropriately at $0.99, so you’ll feel like you got a great deal if you enjoy the game. Lifeboat finds itself disappointingly stranded in 3-Dimple territory.

DropSum, a relatively new number puzzler from The Game Creators, has hit the app store. Playing like a cross between Drop7 and DownToZero, DropSum offers a game of simple addition in an appealing, addictive wrapper.

DropSum presents the player with a 7 x 7 grid into which you must drop numbered balls. The object is to create a line of balls whose sum totals 9. The line must run horizontally or vertically. Initially, the balls dropped into the puzzle are gray and mostly contain small numbers, from 1 to 3. Once a line of 9 is formed, the balls that constitute the sum change to blue. The next time a blue ball is part of a line of 9, the blue ball turns yellow. When a yellow ball forms a 9 line, it turns red. Using a red ball to create a line of 9 causes the red ball to explode, and any balls on top of the exploded ball fall to fill in the vacated space. There is a possibility that these falling balls will create new lines of 9 in their new positions, continuing the cycle of balls changing colors and exploding, which really drives up your score. As you get deeper into the game, larger numbers will appear, making it more difficult to easily create lines of 9. It takes plenty of strategy and a bit of luck to achieve high scores. Gameplay is untimed to allow you to set your own pace, and the game ends only once all of the squares have been filled with balls.

Destroying 10 or more balls in a single turn will give you an orange power ball. This ball will destroy any ball that it lands on. Occasionally, a numbered octagon will be thrown into the mix. These octagons play just like the numbered balls, except exploding an octagon will cause a star to appear in the upper left corner of the board, offering bonus points. Your current score appears in the upper right corner of the screen. The upper left contains the sequence of the next 4 balls to be used, giving you the opportunity to plan out your positioning. The bottom of the screen indicates the number of exploded balls needed to advance to the next level. Once the game ends, your success rate is translated into a percentage of genius and is accompanied by an entity that contains a similar level of genius for comparison. Most of these are pretty humorous. There are also trophies to collect for reaching various milestones and the game autosaves your progress in the event that you accidentally exit or need to take a call. DropSum recently updated with OpenFeint, allowing for online leaderboards to compare your skill to other players.

Graphically, the game oozes polish. There are two themes to choose from: Modern and Classic. We preferred the dark styling of the Modern version. There is a decent soundtrack in the game, but you can also listen to music from your own library. Controls are simple. Just tap the column into which you’d like the current ball to drop. Our only complaint is that the completed number combinations flash so quickly that you don’t get a chance to actually see which balls are changing and exploding until they finish and you are left with the aftermath. It would be nice if that aspect were paced a bit more like Drop7, which highlights and holds on the targeted balls for a brief moment before moving on. Otherwise, we couldn’t be happier with the enjoyable gameplay and slick look of The Game Creators’ offering.

Replay value abounds, as no two games are ever the same and some simple planning can really lead to lengthy games and very high scores. DropSum is currently on sale for the rest of August, dropping to $0.99 from its usual price point of $2.99, so be sure to pick up this 5-Dimple treat while the getting’s good.

Lunarcy, the self-described “arcade type, puzzle orbit simulation game,” has been released by The FABRIK in the app store. Though it sounds like a mouthful used to describe a complicated game, Lunarcy is actually a simple, yet challenging, offering.

The goal in Lunarcy is to use your spaceship to dock with the space station for refueling, then return safely to your home planet. Of course, there’s a bit more to it than that. You’ll have to master the physics involved with gravitational orbit, as well as use fuel for maximum efficiency and avoid damaging your ship upon re-entry. There are nearly 50 levels in the game, offering plenty of time to hone your skills. There is even a level select option, allowing you to jump to any previously completed level quickly. Each level is a bit different, changing up the orientation of the orbiting station, adding additional stations to dock with, introducing stronger gravity fields, and much more. A tutorial is available to walk you through the nuances. Gameplay is pretty addicting, as we found ourselves engaged for 45 minutes without realizing it.

The graphics have a strong retro feel to them, simple yet fitting for the simple nature of this game. It’s definitely a throwback to the early days of video gaming. The music is good, too, reacting to your movements on-screen in a pleasing way. The controls are also easy to get used to. Left and right buttons controls the direction which your spaceship spins. A rotational stabilization button between these buttons stops your spin, stabilizing your ship so that you can find the proper orientation in which to dock or land. A thrust button on the right side of the screen powers your ship. Of course, you’ll want to use this in tiny bursts, as it burns fuel quickly. Once you’ve used up all of your fuel, you’re given the option of restarting, though if you wait, your ship may still land safely on occasion, as it did for us. There are plenty of stats on-screen to assist you in your goal. You can quickly assess your speed, the direction and distance of the station and planet, and more.

In truth, hooking up with the stations is not so hard. If you are close enough, you’ll dock with little issue. Docking earns credits. Tap the ship to undock. It is the landing that is most difficult. We spent much time orienting toward the planet, giving a little thrust, and trying to spin the ship to land in the right way. More often than not, we would just fly past the planet and enter into a different orbit. It was a huge relief when we finally landed, even if we weren’t in the proper position and we exploded. At least we made it back. With some practice, you’ll get the mechanics down. The learning curve, however, is quite steep. A rough landing will require you to use credits to replenish your stats, thus reducing your high score.

We haven’t seen anything that resembles Lunarcy in the app store, so it appears to be fairly unique in that sense. Replay value may be a bit limited, though you can probably find ways to improve your previous scores. There is no global leaderboard. Priced at $2.99, some might find it a bit hefty. We feel it could certainly justify a $1.99 tag. Despite its difficult to master controls and lack of global leaderboard, Lunarcy is a 4-Dimple star.

If you’re an iPhone owner, you’re used to graphics looking clean and polished. Eye candy is old hat to you. However, with the rise of the iTunes App Store, the OS is open to developers lacking, shall we say, UI design prowess. If you’ve found yourself wincing at many an app you’ve downloaded, wince no longer. Say hello to Circuit Strike. One by Chillingo and developer H.grenade. Though not brand new to the App Store, CS.One is quite an installment of visual extravaganza.

Gameplay is carried out within a virtual computer network. You pilot a tiny fighter ship aiming to blast the living daylights out of the system administrator’s defensive minions. Data Cores on each level must destroyed to progress through the game. This is accomplished by taking out the Shield Generators while dodging attacks by Turrets, semi-intelligent Tracers, and AI Fighters. Once defeated, you can collect an enemy’s Ghost Data (little green crystal-like objects left behind). The more Ghost Data you gather, the more your Bullet Time is increased. Bullet Time is a sort of power-up which enables travelling through enemies and objects. As the last Shield Generator on a level is demolished, the Self Destruct Sequence begins. The Data Core must be defeated before the counter reaches zero or the game will end.

At the end of July H.grenade incorporated an additional control mechanism into Circuit Strike. One version 2.0 — Dual Sticks control. Here the gamer places one thumb on the left pad to control inertia-movement, and one thumb on the right pad to direct weapons fire. The result is a natural control experience that still commands a level of skill to master. And if you’re looking for a true mastery challenge, the previous two control schemes are still available.

Circuit Strike. One is endowed with phenomenally rendered graphics that come off more as a light-show than a computer network environment. As you overcome enemy ships, you’ll be delighted as the atmosphere explodes with colorful hues. Additionally, the game’s thumping soundtrack tags along in a reactive manner. If you prefer your own music selection, Chillingo and H.grenade have incorporated the now-expected iPhone OS 3.0 library access to CS.One. They have also built an in-game email system to contact friends without exiting. This is in addition to the online leader boards which are accessible through H.grenade.

Perhaps you’ve come across Circuit Strike. One in the App Store and figured it as another space shooter bringing nothing new to the touch screen. In the contrary, its recent update to version 2.0 makes CS.One one of the most satisfying 2.5D shooter titles we’ve come in contact with — especially at its $0.99 price tag (as of this writing). Plus, Chilling has just released a Lite version [Lite]. Take a look at the embedded video and images and see why we deem Circuit Strike. One a 5-Dimple Hero.

Block Drop, a beautiful and addictive new strategic puzzler created by Dan Russell-Pinson, is now available in the app store. With randomly-generated level structures and musical compositions, you’re sure to enjoy an experience than can never be duplicated.

Block Drop has a simple premise: remove all of the blocks on each level until only the block with the checkered flag remains. This is accomplished by strategic maneuvering of a sparkling gem. The game takes place upon a serene body of water. A number of blocks rise out of the water. One block contains the checkered flag and another has a gem perched atop. You control the gem. Each time you leap off of a block, the block disappears into the water. If you jump off of a tower of blocks, the bottom block disappears, lowering the tower by a single block. You must discover the patterns of jumps that will eliminate all of the blocks, causing your last jump to be onto the checkered flag block.

Each level’s structure is randomly generated, so you are forced to figure out a legitimate pattern to achieve your goal each time, rather than memorize a previously-used jumping pattern. The graphics are gorgeous, with a sunset-like background and rippling water effects. The background music is also randomly generated, creating dreamy, New Age compositions that enhance the relaxing atmosphere. Controls are simplistic, as well. There is a virtual pad on the right side of the screen to control left, right, forward, and backward jumps. Simply touch any direction to jump one space. To jump two spaces, touch and hold the little square button on the left side of the screen while tapping a direction arrow. Missing a block plunges your gem into the water and restarts the level. Occasionally, you will encounter survival levels, where columns quickly rise from the water and disappear just as fast. You must be quick to avoid getting wet. There are 999 levels in the game, so it should keep you fairly busy.

A mini top-down map is in the upper right corner, which can be helpful as you get deeper into the game and your view of some blocks may be obscured. You can choose to replay any previously played level from the menu screen, though it will be in a different configuration. You can also view the level solution from the options menu, in the event that you really get stumped. A quick tutorial is also available to visually explain the game mechanics.

As the game offers near limitless possibilities, replay value is extremely high. You can easily lose yourself in the game for an hour or more without realizing it. Block Drop is currently enjoying an introductory sale price of $0.99, so get it before it goes up. Ten levels for a penny is a huge bargain. Block Drop is a 5-Dimple must-have.

Spider: The Secret of Bryce Manor, one of the most inventive and unique games that we’ve come across for the iPhone and iPod Touch, has been released by Tiger Style in the app store. Creating a ton of buzz and receiving rave reviews (at one point, iTunes showed 102 5-star reviews and nothing below a 5), we were a bit skeptical about how good this simple, unhyped game could be. We were happy to discover that Spider earned every one of those 5-star review.

Imagine you are a spider. What do you do? Spin webs. Eat bugs. Repeat. You inhabit a creepy, abandoned home known as Bryce Manor. It appears that the previous tenants are no longer residing there, and it is quite possible that they left in a hurry. No worries. That just means fewer obstacles as you go about your day, feasting upon insects to replenish your silk supply. Spin enough webs and eat enough bugs and you’ll open a portal through which you move from beautifully-rendered room to beautifully-rendered room. As you traverse the house, it begins to become evident that something is amiss in this household. But what? That is the mystery that you must solve. Or don’t, because simply spinning webs and eating bugs is actually way more fun than it sounds or we ever could have imagined. There is no right or wrong here. Well, technically, if you don’t eat enough bugs and run out of silk, you won’t advance, but plan accordingly and spin strategically and you’ll be fine.

There are plenty of bugs available in each room, and they all seem to move about in a fairly predictable pattern, which allows you to create a web in an area that you know certain bugs will pass through. The controls are spectacular and much of the enjoyment of the game comes from the near-flawlessness of these controls. To move about, you hold your finger on the screen in the direction that you want the spider to move. He’ll actually move pretty quickly, which is another terrific decision by Tiger Style, as waiting for the spider to amble slowly about could have left some gamers bored. Holding for brief periods makes the spider move a bit slower and allows you to fine-tune your speed. Jumping requires a swipe of your finger in the direction that you want to jump. This spider has hops! To spin a web, you must find a solid point upon which to anchor your web. Move your spider to an anchor point and tap him to start a web. From the anchor, swipe your finger to jump to another point. If it is solid and close enough, a silk thread will be formed between the two points. If it cannot be an anchor point (such as a wash basin) or it is too far away, the thread will not form. If you create a thread, tap the spider again to start another anchor and swipe to create another thread. If your silk threads combine to form a geometric shape, a web will automatically form in the center and any bugs that cross that area will become ensnared. Bon appétit! There are a few meals that will require a bit more work. For instance, hornets will not get caught in your web. They must be tackled out of the air with a flying leap, which rivals even a Ray Lewis blindside in our opinion.

There are 28 rooms in which to eat and search for clues to the happenings at Bryce Manor, as well as 4 game modes: Adventure, Feeding Frenzy, Hunger, and Precision. Adventure is the main game mode, while Feeding Frenzy and Hunger involve eating ravenously. Precision puts your web skills to the test, with less available silk. In addition, there are 24 Webspinner achievements that can be earned, from spinning a certain number of webs to earning a certain number of points to unlocking all of the family secrets. Lifetime stats are maintained so that you can see how much work you’ve put into the game. Spider integrates with Facebook, so you can brag about your success or compare scores with friends. There is also a local, Facebook friends, and global high scores list to motivate you.

Graphically, there are few games that look better than Spider. Major attention has been paid to the details and it shows. The soundtrack is great, too. There is a good mix of music, from funky to a bit creepy, which helps to set the mood for each room. Controls are fantastic. Many of the details have been explained previously. You can also zoom out and explore each room by tapping with two fingers and swiping to pan. Another two-finger tap returns you to the game. The only, and we mean ONLY, negative that we could find was the lack of an ability to replay levels once you’ve completed them. Hopefully, this can be addressed in an update.

There is nothing like Spider in the app store. It stands on its own and stands proudly. Replay value abounds, from attempting to capture all bugs to unlocking all achievements to just having fun spinning webs and enjoying the spider’s control scheme. We can’t praise the game enough for bringing something new, exciting, and addicting to the app store. For $2.99, you will not be disappointed. 5-Dimples all the way!

Do you like comics, strategy, and action? If so, Cartoon Wars – a castle-defense title by Blue – is not a game you’d want to miss! The objective is to push through an onslaught of enemies, reach their castle, and destroy it. In a genre that seems to be reaching its watershed point, it is ever so impressive to see a game that is still able to stand out.

Some games look really impressive at first and then never live up to the expectation; Cartoon Wars, however, starts off bad, and never ceases to impress later. You learn right away that the game has an annoying and excruciatingly repetitive sound track; what’s worse, it does not respond to volume control. Then, it goes further downhill when you hit “rankings” and it takes you to safari; come on Blue, we are way past that stage. The help section is the inflection point of your acquaintance – while the spelling errors are inexcusable, Blue presents all the necessary information in a remarkably clear fashion.

The in-game graphics are nothing short of awesome! With so many CD games out there, the cartoon theme is an ingenious way to stand out and it works remarkably well. At this point I was hooked. Shortly after, I realized that to get a mere first impression of the gameplay would require at least a few hours; I ended up spending 3.5 on my very first stab at the game. Like in Medieval by Brisk Mobile, your castle is equipped with a bow that provides invaluable back up to your troops. However, instead of having to pull the string back and release every time you shoot, Blue has you hold down the fire button and simply slide back and forth to control the elevation; both firing mechanisms are innovative and fun in their own right. It is the first visit to the upgrade shop that will have you toying with the idea of calling-in sick the next day.

The upgrade shop is available at all times, not just between levels. At the shop you have 8 army units to purchase, 4 ways to improve your castle, and 4 ways to improve the productivity of your nation. Each of the 16 items has 6 levels of operation – leaving you in a constant need of financial capital. To buy or upgrade a unit you need gold and to manufacture a unit for deployment you need mana; both gold and mana are earned during battle, and productivity of both can be improved in the shop. There are several intricacies and dynamics of gameplay that are very hard to communicate without overwhelming you, but let me tease you at least a little bit. Right behind your castle there’s a mysterious “mana-booster” that, at the beginning, seems to serve a standard purpose, but in effect it has the potential to make or break your campaign and even change your entire game-plan (as it did for me).

With an impressive cast of characters on each side you just hope that you will never reach that final level; as it stands, Blue has you thinking that the variety of new enemies is simply endless. I will say that it would be disappointing if Blue never offered an option to play as the other nation; a feature that will definitely solidify their place at the top of the genre. With seemingly endless gameplay, you will welcome the option to save the game between levels. On that note, my recommended improvements are: offering more than one save slot, fixing the volume control issue, and, most importantly, replacing that woeful sound track!

I wouldn’t worry about getting value for your $0.99. Besides offering incredible depth and one of the most addicting gameplays in the app store, Blue shows us that they mean business by refusing to rest on their laurels as they are already working on an update. Cartoon Wars is a great product, offered by a committed developer, at a great price; if that does not spell out “no-brainer” than what does?!

Str8ts, a stellar new Sudoku-style puzzle game from Syndicated Puzzles, is available in the app store. A cross between a Sudoku puzzle and a crossword puzzle, Str8ts is sure to give Sudoku fans something to get excited about all over again.

The Str8ts board is a 9 x 9 grid full of mostly white squares with a few black squares strewn about. The black squares effectively divide the board into several compartments of white squares of varying length. A single digit, between 1 and 9, must be entered into each square. There can be only one instance of each number per row or column, just like in Sudoku. The major catch in Str8ts is that all of the digits in each compartment must be part of a straight, such as 4, 5, 6, and 7. The numbers need not be in order, such as 6, 4, 7, and 5, so long as there are no gaps in the straight. An invalid straight would be 4, 6, 7, 8, since the missing 5 creates a gap. Some of the black squares contain numbers, too. These numbers cannot be used in the row or column that intersects at that point and are not part of any straight, either. There is a very detailed tutorial that also takes you through the completion of an entire puzzle. This can be helpful to newbies.

The graphics are simple, yet appealing. Buttons and squares are big enough to avoid mis-taps. There are no special sounds or background music; just pure gameplay. The controls are pretty simple. Below the game grid, the digits 1 through 9 each have a button. Tap any square to highlight, and then tap a number to enter it in the grid. There is an erase button to clear the highlighted square. Undo and redo buttons are self-explanatory. The check button can be used to validate the puzzle. Any errors are highlighted in red. If the puzzle is error-free, the border will flash green. There is even an option to enter notes, which appear as tiny numbers. With a square highlighted, tap the notes button and any possible numbers. Each will be entered in the highlighted square for future reference. Each and every puzzle has a unique solution that can be arrived at using only logic.

There are 4 difficulty levels: Jack (51 puzzles), Queen (300 puzzles), King (300 puzzles), and Ace (100 puzzles). Those 751 puzzles should keep any gamer busy for some time. The game autosaves your progress for each difficulty level, and a timer tracks how long it takes you to complete each puzzle, though these times seem to have no bearing, nor are they stored anywhere. At $2.99, Str8ts is a terrific, 5-Dimple value that’s worth every penny.

Numbrix, an addictive new puzzle game created by Marilyn vos Savant and developed by Threemagination, Inc., is now available through the app store. Featured in PARADE magazine in Sunday newspapers across the country, Numbrix has followed the success of other popular newspaper puzzle games, such as Sudoku, from print to the iDevice.

On its face, Numbrix (a mash-up of the words Number and Matrix) is a fairly simple game that requires no math skills other than the ability to count to 81. The player is presented with a 9 x 9 grid of squares, some of which are pre-filled with numbers in the 1-81 range. Your task is to fill in the rest of the numbers to create a chain that wraps around the grid. The chain must only follow horizontal or vertical paths. Each puzzle requires only logic to arrive at the unique solution, and a timer measures the speed with which you complete each puzzle. When you’ve correctly completed each puzzle, the numbers light up in snake-like fashion from 1 to 81 to indicate your success. You will then be asked if you’d like to submit your time to the global leaderboard for comparison with others.

Numbrix comes pre-loaded with 149 puzzles across three levels of difficulty: easy, medium, and hard. Numbrix will also check for new puzzles when connected to the internet and download any available puzzles to your iDevice, so even if you get through the pre-loaded puzzles, you will receive fresh puzzles weekly. At this time, we have 175 puzzles loaded on our iDevice.

Graphically, the game has a clean interface. The grid squares are not too small, nor will you need to do much scrolling. A translucent number pad pops up at the bottom of the screen to allow easy number input. When viewing the puzzle from its top line, the number pad covers the last two rows. Tap a square toward the bottom of the viewing space and the puzzle will autoscroll down to allow clear view of the bottom rows. To enter numbers, simply tap any empty square and punch in the number on the number pad. Repeat this process until all squares have been filled in.

We had two fairly minor concerns with the game. Our first is simply a preference issue. It would be nice if there was some way to drag your finger and auto-fill short chains of numbers with the next numbers in sequence. For instance, there are times where you might fill in 6 numbers in a row along the grid border. It would be nice to drag and auto-fill the numbers 42-47, rather than key in 42, tap the next square, key in 43, tap the next square, key in 44, etc. This could either be a multi-touch feature (hold auto-fill button with one finger while dragging the range with another) or perhaps a keypad button that you tap and then drag to highlight the range. Once you lift your finger, the auto-fill would enter the next sequential numbers and the single tap method would be re-enabled.

Our other concern was with the high scores list, though the Threemagination team has already addressed it. It appears that the high scores may have been compromised by people replaying the levels after solving them and keying in the numbers as quickly as possible based on their knowledge of the solution. For instance, the top score on many puzzles was about 1 minute, 10 seconds. With a 9 x 9 grid and 24 pre-filled squares, the player must enter 57 unique numbers into the grid, most of which are two-digits. This means that the top scorer was fully completing one square per second (typically requiring 4 taps each). This amount of time left no room for logical thought and problem-solving. The high scores list was, in effect, a fastest-finger list. The development team recently implemented some controls to prevent the aforementioned form of cheating. We hope that this change gives a more accurate representation of how quickly players are able to complete each puzzle without prior knowledge. We applaud the developers for moving so swiftly to reestablish the integrity of their product.

Threemagination has finally given us the opportunity to take our beloved Numbrix puzzle out of the newspaper and onto our iDevice, and they have implemented it very well. There is plenty of replayability, and the downloading of new puzzles keeps it fresh. Typically, Numbrix is priced at $4.99, though at the time of this review, the price has been cut to $2.99, a terrific deal for this 5-Dimple gem.

The Match-3 genre simply fits the iPhone OS like a glove. Perhaps that’s why the App Store is littered with games in this category. Most don’t bring anything new to the table and aren’t even worth mentioning. Yet, a new introduction has caught AppSmile’s eye.

Puzzlings is a full featured match-3 title with a twist. And its just one in a slew of new games recently unleashed by Bight Games in cooperation with Sonic Boom Games. As with other match-3 games, the end goal is to complete puzzle boards by matching tiles in sets of at least three. Sets of more than 3 tiles award additional points. Puzzlings’ control scheme is fun — drag your finger along rows, columns, or both to rotate the tiles to a desired position. Most tiles take up 1 grid position, but others can occupy more real estate and have limited movement options. Movements are animated very “cutely” giving an little jelly-like feel to the tiles.

Instead of a board timer or movement counter, the Arcade Stage pairs you up against a combometer that depletes if you fail to match quick matches. Conversely, the combometer will rise as you match tiles and will eventually unlock items to be won. Two item unlocks will complete the stage (more about items below). Puzzle House Stages do rely on move count. The combometer will drain if you take too many moves to complete the puzzle. These stages award gold, silver, and bronze medals and have a good amount of replay value. Lastly, Arcade Challenge Stage ups the Arcade Stage required items to five instead of two.

So that’s the match-3 aspect of Puzzlings. But that’s not the highlight. Where this game displays an excelling brilliance is in the platformer twist. Unlike anything we’ve observed in this genre, Puzzlings walks you through puzzles in an overworld. Travel to multiple provinces in Wardrobia as puzzles are completed. Bight has also included a home base for your character. “Character?” you say.

In Puzzlings you play as a character. Naming your “puzzling” is just the beginning of the extensive upgrade system the Bight has included. Discover Wardrobia, your puzzling’s home land. Once a dull gray world, Wardrobia has lots to explore and numerous items to collect. As mentioned earlier, a filled combometer presents items to be collected. Hats, shirts, pants, eye, even moustaches can be added to your wardrobe. Customize your puzzling any way you want and then take snapshots of him/her to send to friends.

Clearly, Bight Games put an abundance of time and thought into Puzzlings. The visuals are impressive and give a huge sense of value to the game. The soundtrack is complete with selections for each game mode and the only thing we would add is an online or local split screen multi-player mode. As it is, Puzzlings is one mega-match-3 game you should absolutely consider.

Dirt Moto Racing, an action-packed ATV racer released by Resolution Interactive, recently roared into the app store. A terrific follow-up to Aqua Moto Racing, their previously-released, jet-ski-infused racing title, Dirt Moto Racing takes the torch and powerslides its way into our adrenaline-fueled hearts.

Dirt Moto Racing features both Career and Single Event mode across 3 levels of difficulty. Career mode allows you to race in 8 tours, each with 4 possible locations (British Columbia, Death Valley, Toronto, and the Florida Keys) whose quintessential environment-types allow you to race a forest landscape, a desert scene, a dirt track, or a beach terrain, respectively. The unique properties of each locale will, of course, affect the handling of your ATV, requiring different strategies to achieve success. Races are 3 laps and pit you against 5 other riders, with 3 selectable AI levels. There are two types of races in which you will compete in career mode: traditional racing and checkpoint racing. Traditional racing takes place on a fixed track. Checkpoint racing has no fixed track. You must race to different checkpoints in a fairly barren, open environment. Location of the next checkpoint is indicated by an overhead arrow. The location and direction of all checkpoints is mapped out prior to the race, so if you are a quick study, you can gain quite an advantage.

Single Event racing contains all of the tracks from Career mode, unlockable by achieving top scores on the same tracks in Career mode. There is also an elimination mode where each race eliminates the last place finisher until one racer outlasts everyone, a checkpoint mode as previously described, a sprint mode for racing against a timer, a freestyle mode for performing stunts, a time trial for racing against your own fastest times, and ghost play, which allows you to download the ghosts of former Top Racers. There are also customization options available for your rider, including outfit, ATV, and gender, as well as tuning points which are earned by medaling in Career events. Top Speed, Acceleration, Steering, Grip, Brakes, Shocks, and Lifts are the areas to which tuning points can be applied, vastly improving these all-important aspects of race physics. There are also 21 unlockable achievements that can be earned through the course of racing.

The graphics are terrific with a smooth framerate. Though not overly detailed, there is enough to keep the game moving and get a good sense of each location. The soundtrack is very good, containing 12 original tracks and realistic engine/ATV sounds. The controls are extremely well done, using a combination of touch controls and the accelerometer. Tilt to steer and control your in-air positioning when getting airborne. Touch controls take care of everything else: braking and acceleration (unless you enable “cruise control” for auto-acceleration), boost for additional speed bursts, camera view, and stunts, which replenish your boost potential.

Stunts add a terrific element to the gameplay, and their implementation is handled very well. As you race over a jump, you may see a red, yellow, or green button appear on-screen. By holding one of these buttons and swiping up, down, left, or right on the screen, you can perform one of 12 different stunts. You can also swipe without including one of the colored buttons to perform one of 4 mega-stunts. As mentioned, stunts are important to build up your boost so that you can accelerate past the competition or get that extra edge when racing against the clock.

Our only real complaint is that, at times, you can get confused as to your positioning and direction on the track. We found ourselves powersliding in a fairly barren terrain and not knowing whether we were coming or going. Dirt Moto Racing includes a feature whereby if you go too far off of the track, it automatically resets you in the proper direction on the track. The feature is nice, but at times feels a bit touch, as you don’t have to go too far off of the track to trigger it. Otherwise, we loved all aspects of this title.

While there are plenty of racing games available in the app store, few are of the ATV/off-road variety, and Dirt Moto Racing stands out as a worthy competitor to any and all challengers. With a deep Career mode and plenty of freestyle-type events, you’ll have plenty of reasons to keep coming back for more. The $4.99 price tag is certainly justified by the outstanding gameplay, local and online leaderboards, and tons of unlockable elements. Resolution Interactive has created a game that, in our opinion, outshines its older, water-based brother to pop a 5-Dimple wheelie across the finish line.

4X4 Jam, an off-road, all-terrain, 4X4 racing game from Invictus, serves up an enjoyable driving experience, whether you choose to outlast your opponents in a checkpoint challenge or outrace them in a “closed” track setting. Of course, the most enjoyable aspect of 4X4 Jam is the ability to roam freely throughout the gaming environment, getting airborne and ripping up turf just for the sheer fun of it.

4X4 Jam features a beautifully-rendered 3D environment in which to experience the realistic physics that will often cause your vehicle to tumble “you-know-what” over teakettle when you take an incline at too high a rate of speed. The game offers 3 difficulty settings and 3 racing options: Off-Road Race, Jam, and Free Ride. Off-Road Race and Jam can support racing against up to 3 on-screen opponents. The former pits you in a race to the finish of 2, 3, 5, or 10 laps. The latter requires you to find checkpoints, or gates, which are indicated by 2 plumes of green smoke. The first to reach 5, 10, 15, or 20 checkpoints is declared the winner. At present, there are only 2 vehicle types to choose from (4X4 Truck or Beetle), 4 customized paint jobs available, and 2 locations in which to compete (Green Fields or Desert). Invictus promises future updates, so hopefully there will be plenty of new vehicles, locations, and other goodies coming soon.

While it can be easy to get lost in the expansive environments, the racing modes feature an indicator arrow, which shows the location of the next gate, as well as the distance to it. The arrow shows the most direct route, which may not always be the best route based on the objects and environmental perils that could impact your trip. Finding the best way is a challenge unto itself. Of course, you can always blow off your racing goals and go where the wind blows, simply enjoying the lay of the land and inevitable crashes and tumbles you’ll take. The game is what you make of it.

The graphics look terrific and the framerate is smooth, even with several 3D vehicles traversing the 3D environment at the same time. The soundtrack offers great engine-roaring and metal carnage sound effects, though vehicle damage is sadly non-existent in the present version. There is no option to play music from your own library at this time, either. Controls come in three flavors, so you can test out different methods to find what works for you. And believe us, with all of the powersliding you’ll be doing, you’re going to want to find the best method by which you can stay the course.

Invictus’ 4X4 Jam gives the player a unique experience, allowing free roaming that you’d be hard pressed to find in another off-road game. This feature alone creates great replayability. Due to its limited current options and sometimes difficult controls, we feel that 4X4 Jam is a solid 4-Dimple racer, with the expectation that the 5th Dimple will be included in an amazing update to a very solid iDevice title.

Reiner Knizia’s Robot Master, a highly addictive, number-based puzzler from Conlan Rios, was recently featured in the What’s Hot section of the app store.

Robot Master presents the player with a 5 x 5 grid upon which colorful, numbered cards must be placed. The value of the cards will be totaled in both rows and columns, and the lowest row or column total becomes your final score. This really forces the player to build values evenly, as balance is the key to racking up a high score. There are 36 possible cards, 6 each from numbers 0 through 5. Of these, you will be dealt 24 cards, with the center square already containing a card from the outset. The placement of the cards is limited to any square adjacent to a square with a card already in it. Strategic planning is of the utmost importance.

Understanding the scoring method will help you to achieve high scores. Each card counts at face value unless there are doubles or triples in any row/column. If doubles are present, the value of the doubled card is multiplied by 10. For triples, the tripled cards count as 100 points regardless of the card’s value. Often times, you will find yourself with 6 or 7 rows/columns above the 100 mark, though your other rows/columns will be valued in the teens. Be sure to build evenly!

There are 2 game modes for you to play: Solo and Versus. Solo contains both Easy and Tournament variations. In Easy mode, you are allowed to skip cards if you choose. It is sort of a practice mode. Tournament mode offers no skips but allows you to submit your high scores to the global leaderboard, provided they are good enough to make it. Currently, you’ll need to score in the 70’s to even have a chance. Versus mode allows you to play against your iDevice or against another player in a pass-and-play game. One player plays the rows, while the other plays the columns. The player who ends up with the lowest scoring line loses the match. You can play either 5 or 12 card modes. In 5 card mode, each player starts with 5 cards and picks a new card after each turn. In 12 card mode, all 12 cards are dealt to each player upfront. This has proven to be a very exciting challenge.

The game graphics have a funky vibe and the soundtrack is pretty upbeat and catchy. If you don’t care for the music, you can play songs from your own collection. Controls are strictly touch-based, as you tap the card to select (in versus mode) and tap the desired square to place the card. As the cards to be played are randomly chosen from a larger pool, the game is never quite the same twice, which increases its replayability beyond its mere addictiveness. Robot Master has quickly become one of our top go-to games, and at $0.99, you can’t afford not to own this 5-Dimple standout.
