TV & FILM: Car Personalities That Will Never Be Matched

Cars play a big role in entertainment and so find themselves in a lot of films. Featuring in almost every film, it’s no surprise that many cars often end up taking a major role within a film – and often a lead role.

A classic example of this is Herbie. Herbie is a popular Volkswagen Beetle who rose to fame in several Disney films, most famously in the 1968 film, the love bug. With a mind of its own, and a heart to match, Herbie was a unique car who was capable of driving itself and famously winning several racing competitions.

Distinguished by the racing red, white and blue racing stripes Herbie soon became famous throughout the world rapidly spurring a love for the cult car, the Volkswagen Beetle.

Herbie went on to appear in a number of other popular films including ‘Herbie rides again’, ‘Herbie goes to Monte Carlo’, ‘Herbie goes bananas’ and more recently, the 2005 smash hit – ‘Herbie: Full Loaded’.

Following his popularity on the big screen, it wasn’t long before Herbie became popular on tv as well. IN 1982, a tv series entitled ‘Herbie the Matchmaker’ hit the screens which included popular episodes such as ‘Herbie to the rescue’ and ‘calling Doctor Herbie’.

Few cars have really been as famous, although there is on car that has certainly enjoyed an equal level of fame, if not more. The car in question is KITT or Knight Industries Two Thousand, a 1982 Pontiac firebird.

KITT was a central character to the tv series Knight Rider. Some of the features that made the car so special included Turbo Boost – or the ability to accelerate rapidly and jump over obstacles. KITT was also capable of driving itself, a skill that it shares with Herbie. Unlike Herbie however, KITT was capable of resisting a large amount of weapon fire thanks to the armour or coating around the car.

Of all of these features, the turbo boost was one of the most popular allowing KITT to accelerate to speeds of up to 200mph and often more. Turbo boost also allowed KITT to jump distances of up to 40 feet a feat that would no doubt turbo boost the motor insurance costs of any policy.

Another car which grew popular during the later part of the last century is the General Lee. The General Lee was a 1969 Dodge Charger that appeared in the Dukes of Hazard Series, a popular television series which ran from 1979 to 1985. The show featured actors such as Tom Wopat, John Schneider and Catherine Bach but most importantly the General Lee.

Painted orange and dressed with a confederate battle flat, the car became a central character to the show even if it lacked the personalities of other cars like KITT or Herbie. A racing car, the doors were welded shut and the windows always opened which led to the famous ‘jumping through the windows’ method of getting into the car which the Dukes of Hazard became so famous for.

Herbie, KITT and General Lee are just three examples of popular cars who became prominent characters within their film or tv series. Since then more and more cars have hit the screens providing more and more outrageous stunts and performances although few have been able to match the personalities provided by these three motorised stars.
