Apple IPod App Reviews: GPush

Owning an iPhone can bring a lot of joy to one’s life. But for some, it’s not all sunshine. We’ve heard complaints about battery life since the onset. But for Gmail users, another shortcoming seems to plague them – the lack of push support for Gmail. With GPush, Tiverias Apps plans to fix all of the above.
Push notification allows a message from an app to display onscreen even when that app isn’t launched. Since the release of iPhone OS 3.0 many developers have rushed to implement this feature in their software. Sadly, Google and Apple haven’t yet jived on providing push notifications for Gmail users.
So, why do you need push notifications of your Gmail messages? Two simple reasons: 1) You won’t need to open your iPhone mail client to check if you have new messages, and 2) you will save battery power since push notifications don’t require the device to search and pull messages from the server, but push it from the server instead.
GPush does an excellent job at both tasks. After initially setting up the app with your Gmail credentials, you never need to access the app again. Now you will receive pop-up messages every time an email is delivered to that account. This works whether the screen is locked or not, or if you’re in another application or not. All GPush requires is an internet connection. If you receive two emails before you check your device, GPush will display the latest pop-up (not both – although the first was displayed before the second email came through). In order to actually read the email, you will need to open your mail client manually. At that time, the iPhone will pull messaged from the server.
We do wish Tiverias Apps included the ability to open the mail client from the GPush pop-up message. We also wish GPush supported multiple Gmail accounts simultaneously. That withstanding, GPush is an excellent app that we recommend all Gmail users purchase. Not only will it enhance your iPhone battery life but it will keep you up-to-the-minute on your latest email happenings. GPush is currently $1.99 on the App Store.
